About Patons Australia
Patons has a long history
which began in the late 18th century when
two enterprising men set up mills in the UK.
Patons mill was in Scotland and Baldwin mill
in England. They amalgamated in 1920 to form
Patons & Baldwin. Australian merino wool
was first shipped from Australia to the P&B
Mill in 1890.
P&B shipped to many
parts of the world including Australia before
a mill was built in Tasmania in 1923.
Patons
established itself in Australia
as the premium hand knitting yarn spinner
and held that position for decades. Due to
the market contracting in the mid 1980's Patons
felt the decline and eventually amalgamated
in 1996 with Alliance Textiles in New Zealand.
In 2000 Patons Australia was acquired by Australian
Country Spinners and this Icon Brand
found a new exciting home to move forward
into the new millennium. Patons Australia
is based in Melbourne with its large mill
in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia. The mill
exports yarn all over the world and especially
Asia where Patons Australia is the sole supplier
of the brand.
Patons Australia has a dynamic design and
marketing team and has the strength of a first
class spinner with a history of over 50 years
of supplying hand knitting yarn to the world.
Patons new range has been rationalised over
the past years to concentrate on known and
trusted quality classics such as Totem and
Bluebell and has developed new inspirational
yarns offering a selection of fibres, textures,
visual appeal, handle, colour and a pattern
support for all segments of the market.
The yarn and design
range is reaching out to the new knitter, the
lapsed knitter and the experienced. Our brief
is to market quality yarns to an audience who
will find hand knitting a new and rewarding
craft of today.
Our standards are high and
our focus is on quality, fashion, innovation
and service.
We are200 years young
with the responsibility of a prestige world
renowned brand and the challenge to excite
a new generation of knitters around the world.
